Since August 2007, the Delmar Middle & High School in Delmar, Delaware has been using SubSmart Registry. This is a small school district with only 76 teachers and 24 substitutes. We have discovered that over 90% of the teaching assignments have been confirmed online by the substitutes without any substitute coordinator intervention.  During the critical morning hours, roughly 1/3 of the these jobs were confirmed by the substitutes and the remaining were called in by the substitute coordinator.

We have had great success in matching substitutes to the right job. Teachers are getting their preferred substitute 55% of the time. When preferred substitutes are unavailable, about 30% of the jobs are going to substitutes who prefer to teach that particular subject. Therefore, 85% of the time, teachers are getting someone they particularly want or the substitute feels they are strong in that subject. Only about 15% of the time, is a random substitute placed in a job. Most of the time, this has happened when jobs are confirmed in the morning.

When the job offer pyramid was first developed, we believed that substitutes would be better matched with a perhaps a tradeoff on the ability to fill positions. In other words, we conceived that if we matched people better it would become harder to fill some positions. However, to our complete surprise, we have discovered that not only are we matching better but we are also filling the positions better as well.

Success at Delmar, Delaware proves that our system works for even small school districts. We believe that the above statistics and performance will only improve with larger districts that have more substitute teachers.
